Bogus! Here are some recent emails falsely claiming to be a complaint from the BBB |
||||||||||
Remember, these emails are pure fraud, like every other SPAM message you probably have to endure in your daily emailbox visits. They are clearly using the good BBB name to try to fool you into trusting them. You were wise to be suspicious! If you get these, or any other variations, delete them immediately, and stay on guard. (The virus link has been removed, of course.) A Microsoft report estimated that 97% of all email messages are unwanted, which is the definition of SPAM. It has been estimated that over 200 billion (yes, that’s B for billion) emails are created every day. The virus-laden links all point to legitimate web sites which have had their logon/password combinations compromised, unknown to the site owners, of course. With access to the web site’s files, the bad guys simply put their virus file on a unique single page within the otherwise legitimate site, then send a link to it in these emails. An analogy might be if some scammer got keys to your business/home office, and was able to sneak in each night undetected to use your phones, fax, internet connection to run his fraud operation. The takeaway is a new kind of maintenance task: that whoever runs your business web sites should ensure that there are no rogue web pages hiding within, and maybe consider changing its password to a new, complicated one.
